No doubt. Just take our program books from different conventions, and look at the speakers, and look at the shift. It is obvious. The origins of ADC are defamation of Arab American community, and ABSCAM, and so on. Defamation of the Arab community is why ADC emerged. But, it’s very true that because of crises in the Middle East, from the Israeli invasion of Lebanon—it was a mess. And because of [the] high proportion of immigration from that region, that community is still extremely connected to the “old country.” ADC attracted activists, in later years—and it’s normal, I guess—it attracted those who are most interested in the issues of the day. Not the image of the Sheikh in the movie, or stereotypes, the issue was Lebanon, Palestine, and issues affecting their families directly. A major shift was the first Gulf War. ADC was placed in a very tight situation—an Arab country invaded another Arab country. Unfortunately . . . ADC suffered financially because of some misstatements that were made, and so on. [And a] loss of credibility, almost. But by 1997, ADC really rebuilt. That was the shift that started turning us away from foreign policy.23
